Ten Years Old The school play started at six, a full hour before the sun was supposed to set. To the surprise of meteorologists throughout the region, a system of clouds appeared out of nowhere half an hour before that, dark clouds that blocked every bit of sun and a light rain that was barely enough to leave puddles in the school parking lot.

Julie didn’t like to mess with the weather; she had often complained to Andrew that the magic for it tasted bad, whatever that meant. But she had arranged for the rain so that Andrew and Nicholas could go to the play without having to take cover from the sun and give away what they were.

Sitting near the front of the auditorium, Andrew clapped politely after each short scene performed by Jacob’s peers, a discreet elbow in Nicholas’ ribs reminding him to do the same. Nicholas was bored, and as usual he did a very poor job of hiding that fact.

Jacob had failed to explain to them that it wasn’t one single play that the combined fourth and fifth graders of his school were performing tonight. Instead, they were short scenes, each between five and ten minutes long, that the students had written and produced themselves. A quick look through the program had revealed that the scene in which Jacob played a knight was halfway through the second part of the night, after the intermission. Andrew had been just as disappointed as Nicholas to realize he would need to wait that long to finally see Jacob perform what he had been rehearsing in his room, alone or with Julie’s help, for weeks. Unlike Nicholas, however, Andrew could hide his impatience. It would be worth the wait when his son finally walked on the stage.

It felt a little like when Jacob had a hockey game and did not play from the start. Watching him wait on the bench always put Andrew on pins and needles. The difference was, Andrew knew how good Jacob was on the ice, just as he knew that Jacob’s abilities came in large part from the physical characteristics he had inherited from the vampire part of his genetic heritage: speed, endurance, an excellent sense of balance and reflexes, all things that Andrew often admonished Jacob not to show off too much.

But tonight, Jacob’s abilities were an unknown factor. Andrew knew Jacob was smart, but he also knew that Jacob’s memory wasn’t always perfect. Andrew could hardly wait to see Jacob perform. Regardless of how things went, Andrew already knew he would be very proud.

The curtain closed, and the auditorium lights came up, signaling the intermission. Across the room, people were getting up to stretch their legs or get refreshments. Others were pulling out their cellular phones and checking their messages. Andrew took out his phone to do the same.
